Outdoor Burning Notices
Please respect all burn bans and regulations to help protect our community, our people, and the land we love. The following is a summary of the outdoor burning requirements for Burnet County ESD No. 8:

A permit is required and may be attained on our permitting website, if you need assistance with applying, please contact the Fire Marshal.

Permits must be reactivated every day you are burning, calling the Sheriff office is no longer required if you have a burn permit for our district.

Keep a responsible adult on site at the burn location while active

A water source must be readily available

Do not light, add to, or push the pile up with equipment after 5 pm
-
Burn piles must be fully extinguished 1 hour before sunset, including embers and coals

Burn piles should be at least 100 feet from any tree line or brush

Only materials generated on the property may be burned. Materials brought in from other locations are prohibited by State law.

If burning is not allowed that day, the system will not allow the permit to activate.
As a district within Burnet County, all ordinances from the county still apply. Read below for a summary of Burnet County's guidelines for outdoor burning:

Activate your burn permit every day before burning, this will automatically notify the Sheriff Office.

Burn during the day only, no later than an hour before sunset

Keep a responsible person with the burn at all times

Keep tools and water nearby to control the burn, relevant to the size of the burn

Don't burn in windy conditions, or with wind predictions of 23 MPH or greater

The burn should not produce black smoke, and be brush, trimmings, wood, or paper only

Burning must be conducted downwind of or at least 300 feet from sensitive receptors (residences, farm life or vegetation).

Law enforcement officers may issue warnings and citations for burning violations
-
No burning shall be conducted on Red Flag Warning days
Is there anything you can burn during a burn ban?
Yes.

Cooking fires are permitted as long as they are contained to a BBQ pit or fire ring no more than 4 feet in diameter. Propane is recommended.

Household trash can be burned in a barrel with a screen top. Please see our information sheet for burning domestic waste.

Recreational fires (eg. camp fires for warmth) are allowed as long as they are kept in a "fire ring" less than 4 feet in diameter to prevent fire spread; does NOT include brush piles or bonfires.
Remember!
No fire should be left unattended! Always keep a water source nearby. The county may issue an expanded burn ban order for all burning, welding, domestic waste, ceremonial fires, cooking fires, etc.

YOU are responsible for your fire, and not exempt from the consequences, damages, or injuries resulting from your burn, or from actions taken by the governing bodies with jurisdiction.
